Play
play \pla\ verb
1. to occupy oneself in amusement (the typical dictionary type definition); to escape?
2. to fully engage in life, in living
3. to celebrate life, discovery (an attitude or mindset?)
4. to find freedom; to explore ideas, concepts; to imagine or dream
5. to be creative in whatever endeavor attempted (see Genesis 1 & 2)
6. to be child-like in discovery of... (education of children occurs primarily through play)
A common definition of work is mental or physical activity that you don’t like, and a common definition of play is mental or physical activity that you do like. But a better definition of work would be mental or physical activity that produces something or delivers some service that is of value to others. And a better definition of play might be mental or physical activity that produces pleasure in the doer. At their best, these merge. If we take our play seriously, we can merge it with our work and thereby do better by our brains and our lives.
In this latest issue of Muse we took a look at a few examples of people that are merging work and play into some very creative work that will inspire and maybe help to instigate some play.
Now get back to work!
