Them Structurally Deficient Blues
As many people have pointed out since its collapse, the I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River here in Minneapolis had been rated as "structurally deficient" as are more than 160,000 other bridges across the country. According to the Star Tribune:The deficiency rating is derived from a complex formula that evaluates many factors and condenses them into an overall score.
Do degrees matter?
Recently, I was browsing on LinkedIn and came across an invitation to join a group just for people who had degrees in art or design. While most responses to the invitation were quite polite, one respondent railed against the idea. His argument was a simple one: namely that a degree doesn't make a person a good designer.Collapse and Recovery
When the 35W bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis collapsed back in August, everyone here in Minnesota (and many other parts of the country) wanted to know what they could do to help. An entirely factually true account of AIGA Minnesota’s Design Camp® 2007
I just got back from AIGA Minnesota's Design Camp® 2007 in beautiful Nisswa, Minnesota. We had nearly 350 designers show up to see a whole bunch of really great presenters, including Jason Munn, Joel Templin, Carin Goldberg and Jakob Trollbäck. Plus, there were presentations from Adobe, John Roberts, Minnesota Center for Book Arts and many more.Advertising and the First Amendment
It occurs to me how rarely we designers think about both the importance and the complication of free speech.
