    The abuse of the apostrophe: one of my biggest pet peeves

    Admittedly, the blatant abuse of apostrophes in our society is not a grave threat to our way of life. Nonetheless, it is something that aggravates me — a lot. Most commonly, people make the mistake with abbreviations and acronyms, for example, DVD’s” and “the 90’s”. Neither of these is correct.

  • The Art of Polish Posters

    Wiktor Sadowski - MacbethLike most designers, I am fascinated by posters. I suppose this is because posters are the closest thing to pure art that most designers will ever work on. I am particularly fascinated by Polish poster artists, who seem to blur the line between art and design. While this is something I normally would condemn, in poster art it seems to be the absolutely right approach. In fact, one could effectively argue that the strict use of non-photographic art in these posters (i.e., painting and drawing) is a critical component of their success. One of my favorite modern Polish posters, by Wiktor Sadowski for a 1985 production of Macbeth, shows how emotionally evocative this style can be. As good as this is, however, the true genius of Polish posters has been in their social commentary.
