Collapse and Recovery
When the 35W bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis collapsed back in August, everyone here in Minnesota (and many other parts of the country) wanted to know what they could do to help. We on the board of the Minnesota chapter of AIGA were no different. We debated the merits of donating money to charity, and while that seemed like a good idea, we knew that we could not donate enough from our coffers to make much of a difference. Besides, we would be just one more group donating money to a cause that had already received considerable media attention. Moreover, I argued that we should do something that would utilize the talents of our membership.
With that in mind, Minnesota AIGA has recently announced Collapse and Recover—the 35W Bridge Poster Project. We are asking AIGA members from Minnesota and around the country to design posters commemorating the collapse of the bridge. Each poster will be printed and mounted by Skyline Exhibits and then sold through silent auction on November 8 at Spill the Wine in Minneapolis (just blocks from the site of the collapsed bridge). Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Minnesota Helps—Bridge Disaster Fund. We are, obviously, very excited about this opportunity to showcase the power and impact that design can have on such an important event.
